Grow your own saffron with this crocus! The most popular Fall-blooming crocus by far, Saffron Crocus is truly exquisite. One of the most expensive spices on the market, the saffron can be harvested off of each bright red stigma to be used fresh or dry in your Mediterranean and Asian dishes.

Please note: They sprout foliage in Spring (fine grass like leaves), but in the Fall is when they will flower then produce their valuable saffron spice!

    When to plant Crocus bulbs?

Plant crocus bulbs in the fall when daytime temperatures are in the 60’s or lower on a consistent basis.

    How to plant Crocus bulbs?

Crocus require soil that drains well. They do best when planted in an area that gets at least 4 hours of full sun per day.

Plant Crocus bulbs with the pointed end facing up 2-3” deep. Space Crocus bulbs 2-3” apart when planting.

Where is the best place to plant Crocus bulbs?

Crocuses are low growing (under 8”) early spring flowering bulbs. They can be placed the front of planting beds and borders, so they are easily seen. Crocus can also be planted throughout the lawn for a burst of spring blooms among the grass.

How to plant Crocus bulbs in grass?

Using a small shovel, bulb auger or bulb planter create holes throughout the lawn. Place the Crocus bulbs 2-3” deep in the holes that you removed the grass from. Place the grass and soil that was removed to plant the Crocus in back over the crocus. The bulbs will break through the soil in spring and grow among the grass.

    Planting Crocus bulbs in Pots

Crocus can be planted in pots in temperate climates that do not experience many freeze and thaw cycles. If Crocus are planted in pots in above ground containers in a climate that has varying winter temperatures the pots will need to be insulated to protect the bulbs from the effects of the freezing and thawing that may occur.

New gardener, have never grown crocus before but was intrigued with the prospect of getting even one dish made with saffron. I had my doubts that the croms would even sprout so late, but they have! Still hoping for blooms.

Got bulbs around September 22, planted within 2 days. Nothing happened for 6 weeks. Finally have green sprouting. But we have had numerous frosts so I am covering every night. No blooms yet! It seems they were sent a month late. Hoping I get blooms before they freeze.

    Excellent bulbs

I ordered these last year and wanted to give them a little time before writing a review just to be sure I'd give an accurate review. I love them! I planted them last fall (late October) in zone 7a and was able to get a bloom out of them before it got too cold. They bloomed very well this fall too. It's been fun harvesting the saffron.

Great value for a novelty 'foodie' item...I HAD to try them! Planted last Fall. They promptly sent up tons of foliage this Spring, which I understand will die back prior to the flowers' appearance in Autumn. So far, so good! Will update when I harvest later this year!
