Special Features

Plant bulbs with their top just above the soil level. Do not water too much. Best known as an excellent indoor plant. In bloom 6-8 weeks after planting. Can be planted outdoor in warm climates. Not winter hardy.

Features of Species or Group:

Large flowering, making an impressive display. The number of flowers per stem varies but normally one stem produces more than one flower, and one large bulb produces more than one flowering stem.

Features of Genus:

Hippeastrum (Amaryllis) comes from the Greek hippeus (knight) and astron (star), perhaps because of its shape: the flower stem being lateral to the leaves at the top, metaphorically similar to the colors at the top of a knight’s lance. The genus is comprised of around 70 species, all native to south America. The flowers are carried on a strong stem, which has no leaves but frequently is covered with a “bloom” of wax.
