Encouraging International Cooperation in Addressing PD The affiliation signed November 4, 1994 formalized a working relationship between APDA and the Associazione Italiana Parkinsoniani (AIP). The expanded collaboration established an Electronic International Parkinsons Disease Resource Guide with 13 initial participants, which has grown to become the 25-member World Parkinson Disease Association. AIP was begun by a small group of Italian Parkinsonians, caregivers, friends and medical professionals and grew to more than 3,000 members before the APDA-AIP agreement. Today the association has 23 offices across Italy and more than 25,000 members. It sponsors annual national conventions for patients and their families with participation by physicians, social workers, physiotherapists and psychologists as well as regional conventions and meetings. It also provides support groups, and raises public awareness to the importance of raising research funds. Most recently AIP established a Young Onset Parkinsons Group in Italy, and the APDA signed an agreement of cooperation with the Young Onset Parkinsons Association, an organization of more than 1,000 patients across the United States diagnosed under 50 years of age. In 1998 the World Parkinsons Disease Associations bylaws were registered in Milan, Italy, with the goals to improve the quality of life of Parkinsons patients worldwide, broaden public awareness and contribute to the development and sharing of greater knowledge of Parkinsons disease and to establish guidelines for a continuum educational program for patients. The organization also encourages standardization of diagnostic procedures and medical/surgical therapies, supports research, and established and maintain contacts with national and international organization aiming to promote the support of patients with Parkinsons.
