The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. was founded in 1961 to 'ease the burden and find a cure' for Parkinson's disease. Headquartered in New York, the organization focuses its energies on research, patient support, education and raising public awareness of the disease. In 2004-2005, the APDA budget for research was more than $2.8 million and exceeded $2 million for patient support. Each year the APDA scientific advisory board reviews grant requests and submits recommendations for funding researches whose work shows promise of making scientific breakthroughs or finding improved treatments for Parkinson's disease.
The APDA national office also coordinates the efforts of 65 chapters, 57 information & referral centers and 250 affiliated support groups across the nation.
