Special Features

For rockeries, in the front of borders and for naturalizing under trees. Requires full sun and will then increase rapidly by division and self-seeding. Can be used in containers, for instance with Puschkinia scilloides libanotica.

Features of Species or Group:

Native to Turkey, widely distributed, from the Balkans to the Caucasus. This species has delicate, pyramid- shaped little flowers. The openings of the flowers are small. The armeniacum is the most famous grape hyacinth and has true blue flowers which are trimmed with a delicate white border.

Features of Genus:

Vigorous and easy to grow, grape hyacinths have blue flowers of varying intensity. There are several species and named varieties available, including doubles. The genus got its name from Muscari moschatum. Women in Turkey used to wear this grape hyacinth in their hair as a sign that they were marrying. Grape hyacinths are a great foil for other bright spring-flowering bulbs such as tulips or Ranunculus. This plant has the most impact when planted in drifts. In large gardens, it can easily be naturalized in grass or under deciduous trees.

How to Plant ?

To plant the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the should be planted roughly 3-4" deep and 2-3" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant ?

are normally planted fall, and most will begin to flower sometime in Mid Spring.
