Special Features

Cannas must have an open (abundant bulky foliage) but sheltered position in full sun. Cannas make an impressive focal point in a bedding or grow well in tubs or large containers.

Features of Species or Group:

Not native to India, the name was introduced in the 1570's when the Americas were still known as the West Indies. This is one of the oldest species in cultivation. Not so tall growing as other species, most often in the 3-5 feet range.

Features of Genus:

The Canna is native to the tropical parts of South America and Asia, with one species growing in Florida and the West Indies. The common name, " indian shot" is because the hard seeds were used by natives as bullets if real bullets were not available. If the seeds are good and ripe they are as hard as iron. On a more peacefull note, the seeds also make very nice rosaries. The plants are perennial, herbaceous plants, with long, sturdy, unbranched flower stems. Their foliage provides a tropical touch to any garden.

How to Plant Canna Bulbs?

To plant Canna Bulbs the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Cherry Red Pfitzer's Dwarf Canna should be planted roughly 2-3" deep and 12-14" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Cherry Red Pfitzer's Dwarf Canna?

Canna Bulbs are normally planted spring, and most Cherry Red Pfitzer's Dwarf Canna will begin to flower sometime in summer.
