The Ruby Giant Species Crocus is a variety with ruby-purple flowers which can be enjoyed for several weeks in spring. Ruby Giant crocus are the best crocus for windy and rainy conditions.

Ruby Giant are Crocus tommasinianus, also known as Tommies. They are among some of the only crocus that deer and squirrels tend to stay away from.

Plant Ruby Giant Crocus in lawns for a violet-ruby splash of color through out the lawn. They also look good planted in mass quantities along woods edge. Planting them in groupings in rock gardens and the front of garden beds allows for up close early spring color.

    When to plant Crocus bulbs?

Plant crocus bulbs in the fall when daytime temperatures are in the 60’s or lower on a consistent basis.

    How to plant Crocus bulbs?

Crocus require soil that drains well. They do best when planted in an area that gets at least 4 hours of full sun per day.

Plant Crocus bulbs with the pointed end facing up 2-3” deep. Space Crocus bulbs 2-3” apart when planting.

Where is the best place to plant Crocus bulbs?

Crocuses are low growing (under 8”) early spring flowering bulbs. They can be placed the front of planting beds and borders, so they are easily seen. Crocus can also be planted throughout the lawn for a burst of spring blooms among the grass.

How to plant Crocus bulbs in grass?

Using a small shovel, bulb auger or bulb planter create holes throughout the lawn. Place the Crocus bulbs 2-3” deep in the holes that you removed the grass from. Place the grass and soil that was removed to plant the Crocus in back over the crocus. The bulbs will break through the soil in spring and grow among the grass.

    Planting Crocus bulbs in Pots

Crocus can be planted in pots in temperate climates that do not experience many freeze and thaw cycles. If Crocus are planted in pots in above ground containers in a climate that has varying winter temperatures the pots will need to be insulated to protect the bulbs from the effects of the freezing and thawing that may occur.

    Beautiful intense color

I planted 200 of these in small clumps and am very pleased with the result. The ones I planted in the ground have bloomed beautifully with a fantastically intense purple. (The handful I put in pots haven't fared as well, but I'm pretty sure that's my fault for providing insufficient drainage.)

They are blooming at the same time as my earliest daffodils and would make a wonderful color combo if planted side by side.

Glorious paired with dutch master yellow daffodil

    Cons:
I really wanted something purple to pair with my yellow daffodils. I threw several early blooming purple bulbs in the ground to see what came up with the daffs, and these crocus came up closest to the same time as the daffs (they bloomed a titch earlier, but they are all in bloom together right now and look excellent together!) They also seem to be lasting longer than some of the other crocus. I will be purchasing more of these in the fall to complete the bed. Thanks!
