Special Features

Great in rock gardens, raised beds, the front of borders or naturalized in grass. Flowers in profusion. Prefers an open, sunny position but may be grown in light shade.

Features of Species or Group:

Native to Dalmatia. The unusual lavender blooms of this crocus open to a star shape and expose bright orange stigmas. Both leaves and blooms appear at the same time. This species seeds freely.

Features of Genus:

There are over 80 species of crocus, mainly late winter and spring flowering, but there are some autumn bloomers, too. Crocus are among the earliest flowers to appear in spring, often pushing their flowers up through the snow. In some species flowers appear some weeks before the leaves. Crocus are mostly native to the countries around the Mediterranean Sea where they usually grow as far east as Afghanistan.

How to Plant Crocus Bulbs?

To plant Crocus Bulbs the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Whitewell Purple Crocus should be planted roughly 2" deep and 2" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Whitewell Purple Crocus?

Crocus Bulbs are normally planted Late Fall, and most Whitewell Purple Crocus will begin to flower sometime in Mid Spring.
