The Crown Imperial is a stately plant which likes to catch all attention and therefore should be planted in between perennials which flower later in the season. Rubra Maxima has very large flame-orange flowers with purple veins and is very nice in modern gardens.

Requires shelter because of sensitivity to wind. Very large flowers, angular.

Features of Species or Group:
  Also called Crown Imperial. Native to western Himalayas. Grows in a wide range of soils. The high stems carry many pendent flowers that are topped off with tufts of leaves, making the species distinct.

Features of Genus:
  The name fritillary comes from the Latin word fritillus, meaning 'dice-box', as the checkered patterns on the flowers of some of the species resemble the checkerboards associated with many games played with dice. There are about 100 species of this striking bulbous plant, which is related to the lilies. Only a few of them are being actively cultivated. The form and colour of the flowers vary considerably from one species to another, and some are fascinating rather than beautiful. The flowers are generally pendent and bell shaped, carried on leafy stems; their height varies considerably. Many fritillaries have a strong scent to them which some people find unpleasant. These plants deserve a prominent place in the spring garden.

How to Plant Fritillaria Bulbs?
 

To plant Fritillaria Bulbs the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Red Fritillaria - Rubra Maxima should be planted roughly 4" deep and 14" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Red Fritillaria - Rubra Maxima?
  Fritillaria Bulbs are normally planted Mid Fall, and most Red Fritillaria - Rubra Maxima will begin to flower sometime in Mid Spring.
