Fritillaria uva-vulpis has 1 to 3 small, bell-shaped flowers on each stem. It is also called Fox's grape. It has a dark brown exterior with yellow edges and a musky scent (that keeps rabbits and deer away). This extraordinary yet attractive flower needs a light background, so that the flower can be seen properly. (plant bulb on its side) It is also known as Fritlillaria assyriaca.

Features of Species or Group: |
| |
This is the correct name for the plant that often is
cultivated under the name Fritillaria assyriaca. It is
native to northern Iraq, western Iran, and
southeastern Turkey. First introduced in 1974, it is a
vigorous species. |
Features of Genus: |
| |
The name fritillary comes from the Latin word
fritillus, meaning 'dice-box', as the checkered
patterns on the flowers of some of the species
resemble the checkerboards associated with many games
played with dice. There are about 100 species of this
striking bulbous plant, which is related to the
lilies. Only a few of them are being actively
cultivated. The form and colour of the
flowers vary considerably from one species to
another, and some are fascinating rather than
beautiful. The flowers are generally pendent and bell
shaped, carried on leafy stems; their height varies
considerably. Many fritillaries have a strong scent to
them which some people find unpleasant. These plants
deserve a prominent place in the spring garden. |

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.
