Dinnerplate Dahlias flower colorful blooms as big as dinnerplate. Each bloom is capable of measuring 10-12" in diameter. This bright yellow and white tipped decorative dahlia will surely help create an award-winning garden! Looks much like the Seattle Novelty but much larger! Official flower used for 14th Wedding Anniversary. Perennial only in zones 8-10.

For the large dinnerplate dahlias, we encourage you to pinch out the center growing tip right above the 3rd full sets of leaves. It will make the plant less top heavy to where you have a need for staking. Consider using a slug bait before its fully grown. Colors can vary in intensity due to soil, weather and humidity.

Special Features

Plant tuberous roots in spring, about four inches deep. Space at least one foot (30 cm) apart, more for large, spreading varieties. Dinnerplate Dahlias Bulbs are extremely frost-sensitive, and must be dug and stored over winter.

Features of Genus:

Dahlias belong to the most popular plants because of their long flowering period and splendid flowers. Interestingly enough, this widely cultivated flower, with its many species, cultivars and varieties, had to be discovered twice. The first description was written in 1615 in a series of books about animals and plants from "New Spain" (modern day Mexico), where the Aztecs cultivated them as ornamental garden plants. Yet it wasn't until 1789 that the director of the Royal Gardens in Madrid received some seeds from the Spanish director of the Botanical Garden in Mexico. Two years later, he described a half double, purple variety and named it after a Swedish botanist, Andreas Dahl. Many experiments followed and many species and cultivars were developed, giving Dahlias the popularity and wide spread admiration they enjoy today.

How to Plant Dahlia Bulbs?

To plant Dahlia Bulbs the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Grand Prix Dinnerplate Dahlias should be planted roughly 1-2" deep and 18-24" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Grand Prix Dinnerplate Dahlias?

Dahlia Bulbs are normally planted spring, and most Grand Prix Dinnerplate Dahlias will begin to flower sometime in summer.
