This 4-6" diameter purple flower petals curl into little tubes poking out from the center. The striking shape and color of the flowers can easily be combined with each other and with perennials. Further more, Dahlias are great cut flowers. Official flower used for 14th Wedding Anniversary.
Perennial only in zones 8-10.
Bloom Time: summer
Minimum for Effect: 5
Cutting: cut the flowers early in the day and remove
Features of Species or Group:
Interestingly enough, the cactus flowered Dahlias are
an old Mexican-cultivated variety, and probably the
farthest deviation from the wild species. The cactus
flowered Dahlia often grows very tall. The double
flowers consist of elongated, pointed petals.
Features of Genus:
Dahlias belong to the most popular plants because of
their long flowering period and splendid flowers.
Interestingly enough, this widely cultivated flower,
with its many species, cultivars and varieties, had
to be discovered twice. The first description was
written in 1615 in a series of books about animals and
plants from "New Spain" (modern day Mexico), where
the Aztecs cultivated them as ornamental garden
plants. Yet it wasn't until 1789 that the director of
the Royal Gardens in Madrid received some seeds from
the Spanish director of the Botanical Garden in
Mexico. Two years later, he described a half double,
purple variety and named it after a Swedish botanist,
Andreas Dahl. Many experiments followed and many
species and cultivars were developed, giving Dahlias
the popularity and wide spread admiration they enjoy
How to Plant Dahlia Bulbs?
To plant Dahlia Bulbs the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Purple Gem Cactus Dahlia should be planted roughly 1-2" deep and 12-18" apart from one another.
Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.
When to Plant Purple Gem Cactus Dahlia?
Dahlia Bulbs are normally planted spring, and most Purple Gem Cactus Dahlia will begin to flower sometime in summer.
