Features of Species or Group: |
| |
Darwinhybrid tulips are both sturdy and tall (60cm or more). A number of years ago, they were the most popular tulips on the market. However, this popularity has diminished considerably, probably because, even though they are a beautiful cut flower, they do not last long. The first variaties were produced in 1936 by D. Lefeber from crossing Tulip fosteriana Mad. Lefeber with a Darwin tulip. These hybrids have large flowers on long stems. They combined the good qualities of both parents; the relationships of the stem length, petal size, flower shape, and plant size to each other were considered ideal. Furthermore, the brilliant colours in all shades between red and yellow were stunning. They look like poppies when they open. The flower is especially striking when it is closed, as it usually is in the morning, when the flower is covered with a slot light gloss. |
Features of Genus: |
| |
There are over 100 species of tulips and many hundreds of hybrids. Most modern garden tulips are the result of extensive breeding programmes that began in the late sixteenth century in Europe and are continuing to this day. Tulips were all the rage at that time as more and more species were introduced to Europe from Turkey, Iran and central Asia. Tulip species range in height from 15-60cm (6-24in) but the greatest number of hybrids are probably in the range of 30-40cm (12- 16in). Tulips look their best in mass plantings of one colour but they can, of course, be mixed. They make very good container plants and are delightful cut flowers. Some of the most charming are the dwarf types which do particularly well in rock gardens and are also suitable for containers. Like daffodils, tulips are split into a number of divisions according to their flower form and time of flowering. |

How to Plant Darwin Hybrid Tulips? |
| |
To plant Darwin Hybrid Tulips the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Yellow Tulip Golden Apeldoorn 100 bulbs should be planted roughly 6-8" deep and 4-5" apart from one another.
Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.
