Queen of Night 'Black Tulip' bulbs are becoming more and more popular among tulip lovers; in fact, they have made America's top 10 list of favorite tulips. Tulip single-late Queen of Night 'Black Tulip' is a classic plant: deep velvety-purple with a silky sheen to the petals. It combines very nicely with Tulip 'Red shine', but it is also marvelous solitary in several pots next to each other.

For perennial borders. Darkest tulip ever produced, blooms fairly early in May and has a long lasting flower.

Features of Species or Group:

Also called Cottage Tulips. There are many different variations of colour and form. For the most part the flowers are large with the basic shape of an egg and are not unlike Darwins in overall appearance.

Features of Genus:

There are over 100 species of tulips and many hundreds of hybrids. Most modern garden tulips are the result of extensive breeding programmes that began in the late sixteenth century in Europe and are continuing to this day. Tulips were all the rage at that time as more and more species were introduced to Europe from Turkey, Iran and central Asia. Tulip species range in height from 15-60cm (6-24in) but the greatest number of hybrids are probably in the range of 30-40cm (12- 16in). Tulips look their best in mass plantings of one colour but they can, of course, be mixed. They make very good container plants and are delightful cut flowers. Some of the most charming are the dwarf types which do particularly well in rock gardens and are also suitable for containers. Like daffodils, tulips are split into a number of divisions according to their flower form and time of flowering.
