Acid soil  A soil which has a pH of less than 7. These soils are usually high in organic matter. The opposite of alkaline. 
Alkaline soil  A soil which has a pH of higher than 7. Often soils which are high in chalk or limestone. The opposite of acid. 
Annual  Of one year´s duration, as in plants that germinate, flower and die all in one season (year). 
Anther  The male part of a flower bearing the pollen. Anthers are carried at the ends of filaments but can be sessile 
Anther tube  Tube formed by the anthers. 
Aureolin  Shade of yellow. 
Axil  The point of junction of stem and leaf. 
Axillary  Growing from an axil. 
Axis  The main line of growth in a plant or organ, as the stem, from which the other parts such as the leaves and flowers grow.
