| Scale |
One of the fleshy parts which makes up the true bulb. |
| Secondary colors |
The colors obtained by mixing equal amounts of two primary colors. The secondary colors in pigment are orange, green, and violet; in light, they're magenta, yellow, and cyan. Also see intermediate colors, which are sometimes called tertiary colors. |
| Senescence |
The aging process of plants. Also applied to the dying parts of a plant that is going dormant for the season. |

One of the segments which make up the calyx of a flower, the outer whorl or the perianth, often protecting the bud. |

With no pedicel, no footstalk, the flower being directly on the stalk. |
| Shade |
A color to which black or another dark hue has been added to make it darker. For example, black added to green makes it a darker shade of green. Value changes from pure hues are called shades and tints. You can see this in the color wheel. |
| Sharp sand |
Not fine sand, coarse gravel used to air the soil. |

Single flowered cultivars, mainly short stemmed and early flowering. |

Atmosphere, special feel, environment. |
| Spike |
A form of simple inflorescence with the flowers sessile or nearly so upon a more or less elongated common axis. |

Collective noun referring to both the filament and the anther. |

The inner perianth segments of an iris flower, often held erect. |

Used to describe a flower that is incapable of producing seeds. |
| Stigma |
The tip of the female part of a flower which receives the pollen. |
| Stolon |
An underground stem; often at the end of such growth another bulb is produced. |
| Style |
That portion of the female organ of the flower between the ovary and the stigma. |
| Subsoil |
The layer of soil below the topsoil which is usually less fertile and of poorer texture. |
| Subspecies |
Name given to a group of plants within a species which do not differ enough to merit species ranking. |
