Delft Blue Hyacinth is one of the most popular varieties!  Despite the name, Delft Blue Hyacinth is a beautiful shade of light purple color that blooms in mid-Spring.  Hyacinth are very fragrant and work well in a cut flower arrangement.  Reaching only about 12" tall, Hyacinth also work very well as a border plant.  Beautiful, fragrant and deer resistant, the Delft Blue Hyacinth is a great choice for any Spring garden bed!

    When to plant Hyacinth bulbs?

Plant Hyacinths in fall when the daytime temperatures have cooled to 60’s or lower during the day.

    How to plant Hyacinths?

Hyacinth bulbs have a noticeably pointed end, this end should be facing up when planted. Dig a hole or trench 6-8” deep and place the bulbs in the planting area, cover the bulb with soil and fill the planting area back up to ground level. Use gloves when planting Hyacinth bulbs.

    Where to plant Hyacinth bulbs?

Hyacinth bulbs bloom in early to mid-spring and look best situated in the front of the planting area. They can be bouquet planted in clumps, where 5 bulbs are placed in 1 large planting hole. Hyacinths make for a lovely formal border where their fragrant and colorful blooms can be appreciated. Hyacinths are hardy in zones 3-8.

What to do with Hyacinth bulbs after flowering?

Spent flowers may be removed by cutting the flower stalk all the way to near ground level. Keep the leaves intact until they are yellow and withered, as the bulb is gathering energy through the leaves while preparing for dormancy.

What are good companion plants for Hyacinths?

Mid-spring blooming large cupped and trumpet daffodils pair well with daffodils, both are deer and rabbit resistant. Triumph Tulips, Darwin Hybrid and Single Late Tulips compliment the many shades of hyacinth flowers.

How to grow Hyacinth bulbs indoors?

Refrigerate Hyacinth bulbs for 8-10 weeks for indoor blooms. If planted the Hyacinth bulbs in pots with soil plant the Hyacinth bulbs in pots before refrigerating so the bulbs can grow roots.

If forcing Hyacinth bulbs in vases with water place the Hyacinths in water in the vases prior to refrigerating.

After the 8-10 weeks of chilling slowly bring the pots and vases to a moderate climate setting in the 60’s.

Once leaves and 1-2” of buds have formed the Hyacinths can be moved to a warm and bright location to enjoy the blooms.

Last spring, I purchased some of the Delft Blue Hyacinths from Tulip World. I planted the bulbs in my front yard around the base of a tree, and they were some of the first flowers blooms to bloom this season. The color is an eye-catching, vibrant blue, making them a great addition to my perennial garden. Highly recommend!
