Special Features

Good for rock gardens, raised beds, or containers.

Features of Species or Group:

Native to the USSR, the Caucassus, and nothern Iran. Easy as container and as garden plant. The leaves are as high as the flowers during flowering time but grow taller later.

Features of Genus:

There are many species of irises, which have true bulbs as storage organs, unlike the creeping rhizomes of their larger cousins. The leaves are not arranged in the typical fan of sword shapes like rhizomatous irises, but are usually narrow and lance shaped, or rolled. The flowers have a typical iris form with six petals, three inner ones (standards), and three outer ones (falls). Many bulbous irises are early-flowering dwarf forms suitable for growing on rockeries or at the front of beds: they are also excellent for shallow pots in the greenhouse or alpine house. Other types are taller and flower in summer; they are valuable for herbaceous and mixed borders.

How to Plant Dutch Iris Bulbs?

To plant Dutch Iris Bulbs the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Gordon (or Cantab) Iris should be planted roughly 2" deep and 2" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Gordon (or Cantab) Iris?

Dutch Iris Bulbs are normally planted Late Fall, and most Gordon (or Cantab) Iris will begin to flower sometime in Mid Spring.
