Stresa Kaufmanniana Tulip In Stock

Tulip kaufmanniana is also being called water-lily tulip because in full bloom the flowers open out horizontally, giving this tulip the appearance of a water-lily. For that reason the inside of this flower is as important as the outside. A sun reveler, opening wide in sunshine it closes at night to flaunt its outer garb of currant-red edged with yellow.

Special Features

For raised beds and rock gardens.

Features of Species or Group:

The Kaufmanniana tulips are sometimes referred to as water lily tulips and were described in 1877 by Regel. They were named after K. von Kaufmann, the governor of Tashkent. They grow wild in Tien Shan. This tulip is 6in (15cm) tall with a long flower which is white with a yellow tint on the inside and pink on the outside. It was given the name water lily tulip because the wide open flowers resemble water lilies. Because it blooms in March, it is one of the very first tulips to bloom. They differ widely and so there are many species; furthermore there are many crosses. Crossings with Tulip Greigii produce a characteristic foliage pattern. These tulips are low to the ground, only 20cm tall. The short stems hold flowers with magnificent colour. They are just the flower to cheer up the early spring garden. The petals open wide in the sunshine.

Features of Genus:

There are over 100 species of tulips and many hundreds of hybrids. Most modern garden tulips are the result of extensive breeding programmes that began in the late sixteenth century in Europe and are continuing to this day. Tulips were all the rage at that time as more and more species were introduced to Europe from Turkey, Iran and central Asia. Tulip species range in height from 15-60cm (6-24in) but the greatest number of hybrids are probably in the range of 30-40cm (12- 16in). Tulips look their best in mass plantings of one colour but they can, of course, be mixed. They make very good container plants and are delightful cut flowers. Some of the most charming are the dwarf types which do particularly well in rock gardens and are also suitable for containers. Like daffodils, tulips are split into a number of divisions according to their flower form and time of flowering.
