This violet flowered variety longs for loamy, well-drained yet moisture-retentive soil, as would be found on the edge of a woodland garden with some shade. It can be used as plants for the rock garden but adequate moisture must be given during growing period. It is also good for naturalizing in grass or flower borders. Alongside a stream or beside a pool is a very good place. The purple
flower is excellent for cutting.

Features of Species or Group: |
| |
Native to Northern California in the United States
introduced in 1896. Found growing in grasslands at
lower elevations on well-drained soils. |
Features of Genus: |
| |
The genus is named after James Brodie (1744-1824), a
Scottish horticulturalist. This extensive genus has
some 30 species, most of which usually are not
obtainable from commercial sources, and has been the
center of much change. Over the years botanists have
divided the genus, and many species formerly listed
under Brodiae are now placed in other genera, i.e.:
Triteleia, Bloomeria, Dichelostemma, Ipheion, and
Muilla. |

How to Plant Perennials? |
| |
To plant Perennials the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Californica Brodiaea should be planted roughly 3-4" deep and 3-6" apart from one another.
Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Californica Brodiaea ? |
| |
Perennials are normally planted spring, and most Californica Brodiaea will begin to flower sometime in summer. |
