Snopdrops (Galanthus nivalis) are a small, delicate white nodding, bell-like flower with green-marked inner petals. The leafless flower stems reach 4-9" and have a few narrow leaves that come up from the base of the stem. Snowdrops thrive in cool, moist, well-drained, part-shade locations. While they like moist soil, they will rot in waterlogged soil or heavy clay with poor drainage. Being generally resistant to deer and rodents, Snowdrops naturalize well, especially under deciduous trees and in woodlands. Their compact size make them useful for small spaces like narrow borders, rock gardens, containers, window boxes, and they can be forced indoors for some cheerfulness when spring isn't coming soon enough.
Being one of the first flowers to emerge after winter, Snowdrops symbolize hope, new beginnings, rebirth, and returning light.
