Special Features

Looks great in containers. Grows best in warm, sheltered areas. Plant a row of them for more effect. Zones 9-10 hardy.

Features of Species or Group:

This species is native to Natal. It has broad leaves, dark green with base clasping flower spikes. Robust spikes of flowers, 30 cm (12 inches) high, holding distinctive flowers edged with purple. The E. bicolor needs moisture throughout the summer but can be allowed to dry out in the fall. Flowering in mid to late summer.

Features of Genus:

From the Greek word 'eukomes' (beautiful headed), this spectacular plant deserves such a complimenting name. Commonly known as the Pineapple Lily, these exotic looking plants come from tropical South Africa. The plant remains interesting for a long period of time. They come into bloom in early summer, and even after the flowers have faded the seed pods are attractive.

How to Plant Specialty Bulbs?

To plant Specialty Bulbs the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Bicolor Eucomis - (Pineapple Lily) should be planted roughly 3-4" deep and 6-8" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Bicolor Eucomis - (Pineapple Lily)?

Specialty Bulbs are normally planted SPRING, and most Bicolor Eucomis - (Pineapple Lily) will begin to flower sometime in summer.
