Strong flower stems bloom in bunches of 6 to 8 pink, trumpet shaped flowers with curved petal tips. Interestingly enough the flowers bloom without any foliage having yet grown. For this reason the Nerine is also known as the 'Naked Lady'. A true gem for the late summer since the flowers don't start showing till September.

Special Features

Useful plant for raised borders, especially under the shelter of a south-facing wall. Planting instructions vary per climate. In warm climates the bulbs should be planted with their necks at soil level, in mild climates they want to be covered by 8 cm (3 inches) of soil and in colder climates they should be planted in pots. The pots should be stored in a cool place where they can't be affected by frost.

Features of Species or Group:

One of the most striking flowers, the Nerine bowdenii brightens the autumn garden producing heads of bright pink flowers before the leaves appear after blooming. These easy to grow bulbs last long when cut.

Features of Genus:

Of all the Nerines, only Nerine bowdenii can be planted out in the open. However, even this species requires a warm, sheltered and sunny location, best of all near a south facing wall. The soil should be light, rich and well drained.

How to Plant Specialty Bulbs?

To plant Specialty Bulbs the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Bowdenii Nerine - Spider Lily should be planted roughly 6" deep and 6" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Bowdenii Nerine - Spider Lily?

Specialty Bulbs are normally planted Mid Spring, and most Bowdenii Nerine - Spider Lily will begin to flower sometime in Early Fall.
