Special Features

Zones 4-7 primary use in containers. Plant the bulbs just under ground level, neck just above the surface.

Features of Species or Group:

This species of Hymenocalis produces one of the favorite flowers in the genus. The plant will loose all it's foliage in the winter, but if kept warm and properly tended to, the bulb will increase its flower production every year. The exotic fragrant blooms resemble those of daffodils.

Features of Genus:

Spider Lilies or Summer Daffodils are native to South America. They produce broad, strap-shaped, deep green leaves and fascinating, lightly fragrant flowers which are carried on a stout stem. Hymenocallis can be grown outside in reasonably sheltered gardens, but the bulbs should be lifted in autumn to ensure survival. All Spider Lilies can be grown in containers.

How to Plant Specialty Bulbs?

To plant Specialty Bulbs the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Festalis ismene (Peruvian Daffodil) should be planted roughly 4" deep and 8" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Festalis ismene (Peruvian Daffodil)?

Specialty Bulbs are normally planted Mid Spring, and most Festalis ismene (Peruvian Daffodil) will begin to flower sometime in Mid Spring.
