Special Features

For rock gardens, raised beds, containers and pots. Also called dasystemon tarda. Multiflowered up till 5 star-shaped flowers per stem, first described in 1933 and found in Central Asia, Tian Shan, bulb produces a stolon

Features of Species or Group:

Native to Turkestan. Star shaped flowers. Leaves forming a rosette.

Features of Genus:

There are over 100 species of tulips and many hundreds of hybrids. Most modern garden tulips are the result of extensive breeding programmes that began in the late sixteenth century in Europe and are continuing to this day. Tulips were all the rage at that time as more and more species were introduced to Europe from Turkey, Iran and central Asia. Tulip species range in height from 15-60cm (6-24in) but the greatest number of hybrids are probably in the range of 30-40cm (12- 16in). Tulips look their best in mass plantings of one colour but they can, of course, be mixed. They make very good container plants and are delightful cut flowers. Some of the most charming are the dwarf types which do particularly well in rock gardens and are also suitable for containers. Like daffodils, tulips are split into a number of divisions according to their flower form and time of flowering.

How to Plant Specialty Tulips?

To plant Specialty Tulips the bulbs should be planted with the nose of the bulb upward (or the roots facing downwards) and the Tarda Miniature Tulip should be planted roughly 2" deep and 2" apart from one another.

Note: For some bulbs you may not be able to tell which way is up or down, in these cases just plant them on their side and they will adjust on their own.

When to Plant Tarda Miniature Tulip?

Specialty Tulips are normally planted Late Fall, and most Tarda Miniature Tulip will begin to flower sometime in Mid Spring.
